![]() So, all in all, yeah it's a bit disappointing considering the band's past. Phosphate Skin is one of the band's best closers, though it's hard to beat World Waits For You or Mystifies Me. Highways & Cigarettes is pretty much the same song, but they do this type of song so well, it's hard to ignore.Īnd the album also ends on a good note. Methamphetamine is a CLASSIC Son Volt song, recalling the lonesome road songs of the band's past (Left A Slide is a good example). (I do like that breakdown riff though.)įortunatly, the band picks up steam by.well, going back. Automatic Society is another throwaway song, and I'm kinda left scratching my head after 3 duds wondering "Why am I wasting my time with this album?" I hate albums with 3 duds in a row. Satellite kinda bores me, with it's weird chord passages and bland hooks. It doesn't work out too well, and sounds like a leftover from the band's worse album, Straightaways. You have songs like Adrealine & Heresy, which sounds like Jay trying to do some Beatles melody with his voice. The title track also pops out of the speakers with full force, which actually rocks harder than Okemah at times.īut once again, like most Son Volt albums, it loses track in the middle. And then there's the short pop songs like Beacon Soul, which sounds like a hybrid of Big Star and Woody Guthrie. Circadian Rhythm has some fascinating lyrics with some interesting backwards guitar playing from Brad Rice. ![]() Underground Dream has a very swelling chorus, and I can't go wrong with that Muscle Shoals-esque keyboards. Action is the first keeper in my opinion, keeping with that classic road-weary rock and roll sound that was prevalent on Trace and Wide Swing Tremolo. Oh well, even Jay Farrar needs to change, which is saying something considering he's made the same album about 6 times.Īnd yeah, there are some really great tracks on this album. ![]() Do we really need to yell and scream and carry on? And yeah, Slow Hearse is a piano ballad with 2 sentences repeated over and over. Also, the thing that really freaked out Son Volt fans was the addition of horns on "The Picture." Come on, people, don't get your panties in a knot. Jay has added a keyboard player, Derry DeBorja, to add organ and piano, which gives a little bit of wash to the band's musical palate. First off, the noticeable change-ups in the group's sound and dynamics. So, let's first point out the positive things on this album. Continuing on the power-pop sounds that were starting to show on 2005's Okemah & The Melody Of Riot, Jay Farrar and company offer pretty much more of the same, but at the same time, sound vastly different than previous Son Volt releases. That being said, I'm wondering just what exactly the goal or message, or even point WAS on 2007's The Search. The voice alone sometimes will carry me, even if it's a song I don't like. He's made a few missteps along the way (I'm looking at you, Straightaways), but on a whole, he's an extremely prolific and vastly underrated songwriter. Rising from the ashes of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar has blazed his own trail with some killer ragged rock and roll/country songs while still staying true to his punk roots. Son Volt, in my opinion, are a vastly underrated band.
